Welcome to Franklin Lakes Fire Department :

Founded in 1924, the Franklin Lakes Fire Department has served the residents of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey for over 80 years. This all volunteer department responds to all fire and rescue calls within the Borough as well as providing mutual aid to neighboring communities. The Franklin Lakes Fire Department protects nine square miles and a residential population of 11,000. This mostly residential coverage area also consists of some industrial and commercial establishments. Also, Interstate 287 and County Highway 208 run through the Borough as well as two major corporate headquarters complexes are located within the first due area.

The department responds out of two firehouses located strategically within the Borough; Headquarters located on the north side of town and the Southside Firehouse which covers the south. The current apparatus fleet consists of three engines, one squad engine, one aerial truck, one tanker, one air and light unit, one support vehicle and two Command vehicles. The Franklin Lakes Fire Department responds to approximately 500 fire and rescue calls per year.


 
Rollover 287 S

At 15:20 hours communications dispatched the fire department to 287 southbound for a motor vehicle crash involving  a rollover. Res3cue along with Eng35ine made the response along with BLS. Once on location a dry protection line was stretched. Crews secured power to and stabilized the vehicle. Speedy dry was utilized to absorb fluids spilled on the roadway. The passenger had self-extricated from the vehicle. The duty tow removed the vehicle. 

After clearing units received another run for an odor of smoke on Navajo Trail Drive. Crews determined that the odor was emanating from a barbecue in the rear of a home. Everyone returned shortly after.

Engine Assist to Oakland House Fire

At 02:45 hours Oakland struck a second alarm for a residential fire they were operating at on Lakeshore Drive in their first due. An engine was requested to respond to the scene in Oakland to assist as all hands went to work. 330, 340, and 332 (OIC Lt. Dodd) responded. 

Oakland command reported a 2 1/2 sty wood frame structure with heavy fire showing from the roof and C side. Oakland crews made an aggressive attack on the fire. Ventilation was conducted by roof crews from Oakland truck 1041 and Wyckoff truck 241. The crew of Franklin Lakes 332 assisted with extinguishing the fire and overhaul. Extensive overhaul was required because of the heavy fire load that confronted firefighters on arrival.

Great job by the Oakland crews and the entire mutual aid response operating on scene! Job well done!

Mutual Aid to Ramsey
Saturday, August 28, 2010

At 1229 Hours Communications dispatched an Activated Fire Alarm on Farmdale Rd.  Cheif Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Engine 335 (Lt. Meyers) and Ladder 342 (Lt. Dodd) responded.  Crews found contractors using gas power tools in the basement area of the home.  Crews vented the home and reset the alarm.

At 1306 Hours Communications dispatched an Activated Fire Alarm on Saddle Back Tr.  Chief Bohny and Engine 335 responded.  Crews checked the home and reported unknown reason for the activation.

At 1409 Hours Communications dispatched 1 Engine to Ramsey for a working structure fire.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel and Engine 332 (Lt. Dodd) responded.  Crews operated for approximately an hour and a half.  Great job done by Ramsey FD and the Mutual Aid!

At 1556 Hours Communications dispatched the Volunteers to a vehicle into a utility pole with the transformer on top of the car on Old Mill Rd.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Res3cue (Lt. Dodd), Engine 335 (LT. Meyers) and Engine 332 responded.  Chief Knubel arrived on location and reported all occupants out of the vehicle.  FLPD and FLFD shut down the road and awaited Rockland Electric to arrive.

While Crews were securing the scene Communications dispatched a car fire on Rt 208 S at Colonial Rd.  Chief Bohny, Engine 335 and Engine 332 responded.  FLPD and the Volunteers checked the length of the highway and reported the fire was unfounded.  Units returned back to the crash and operated until 1730 hours.

On Friday 8/20

At 1500 hours Communications dispatched for an Activated Fire Alarm on Peach Tree Ln.  Units responded and reported an accidental activation.

At 1657 hours Communications dispatched an Activated Fire Alarm on Lynn Dr.  Units responded and advised a problem with the alarm system.

On Saturday

At 0722 hours Communications reported an activated CO Alarm at the Road Department.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Rescue 3 and Engine 331 responded.  Units reported negative readings.

At 1232 hours Communications dispatched the Volunteers to set up a landng zone for a medical patient.  Upon units responding Communications reported the landing zone would not be needed as a ground transport would be used.

At 2328 hours Communications reported an Activated Fire Alarm on Cherokee Ln.  Units responded and reported accidental activation caused by burnt cooking.

On Sunday

At 1345 hours Communications reported a Transformer on fire on King Rd.  Units responded and awaited Rockland Electric to respond.

At 1507 hours Communications dispatched an Activated CO Alarm at the Road Dept.  Units responded and reported no reading, alarm malfunction.

At 2135 hours Communications reported a smell of something burning at Hackensack Medical Building on Franklin Ave.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Ladder 342, Engine 331, Engine 334 and Engine 335 responded.  Units reported a burnt up water cooler.  Command reported the buidling has been vented and all units returned.

On Friday Evening, Firefighters Joe Divver and Cameron Gilmore graduated from the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute Fire Fighter One Program.  This training consisted of over 140 hours of classroom and practical training to prepare these firefighters for some of the emergencies they may face. 
Congratulations to both firefighters and we wish them them the best as they begin their firefighting career.


 
   
   
Engine Assist to Oakland House Fire

At 08:33 hours communications dispatched one engine mutual aid to Oakland for a multi-family residential fire on West Oakland Avenue. Southside Engine 331 made the response with a crew of 7. Oakland units arrived on scene to find a 2 1/2 story wood frame structure with smoke pushing from the roofline. Oakland crews stretched lines to the second floor and attic and made an aggressive interior attack. Engine 331's crew was directed by Oakland command to begin opening up. The crew of 331 split up and sent teams to the roof and the attic to assist. Once the fire was completely extinguished crews began overhaul. An aggressive interior attack by the Oakland crews stopped the fire from spreading and saved the structure. A job well done!

Extrication Drill

Members of the Franklin Lakes Fire Department spent their Monday night drilling on two vehicles to improve and perfect their extrication skills. The members practiced vehicle stabilization, cutting power to a vehicle, and the proper techniques for extricating a victim who becomes entrapped in a vehicle as a result of a crash. The members removed the doors, columns and roofs from the vehicles to ensure complete accessibility to the patients within the car. All the members did an excellent job and most importantly everyone was able to fine-tune their skills!

Rollover

At 06:07 hours communications dispatched the volunteers to a reported MVC on the off ramp of 208 northbound at Ewing Avenue. Once units called in service they were advised that the vehicle had rolled over but that there was no entrapment. Once on scene units secured the power to the vehicle and stabilized it. The engine crew stretched a dry line for protection purposes to ensure the safety of all personnel working on scene. The driver was transported by BLS to the hospital. The car was removed by the tow company. Units cleared within 45 minutes. Great job by all!

Busy Friday for the Volunteers

At 0940 Hours Communications reported an activated fire alarm at Ramapo High School.  Ladder 342 and Engine 331 responded.  Wyckoff Tower 241 and Oakland Engine 1031 responded as per the school response protocol.  Crews checked the school and reported a false activation.

At 2022 Hours Communications dispatched an activated CO Alarm.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Rescue 3 and Engine 331 responded.  Crews checked the home and had negative readings. 

AT 2128 Hours Communications dispatched a utility pole on fire on Rt 208 N at Ewing Ave.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Engine 335 and Engine 331 responded.  Command reported the fire was out and Rockland Electric was already enroute.

At 2323 Hours Communications dispatched the Volunteers for an extrication on Franklin Lake Rd.  Chief Bohny, Assistant Chief Knubel, Rescue 3, Engine 331, Squad 332 and Engine 334 responded.  Crews made quick work of stabalizing the vehicle and securing the power while other crews assistanted with victims.  Great work done by all!

The Fire Department would like to congratulate Firefighter (Former Captain) Steve Post and wife Kelly on the birth of thier son today.  Ryan Patrick Post was born this morning at 8:16 AM weighing 8 lbs. 7 oz. Both Mother and Baby are doing well.

In what has been a very active month, the calls continue to add up. Today the volunteers logged 4 more runs. At 02:13 hours communications dispatched a fire alarm on Arapaho Trail, units investigated and determined a malfunction of the system. At 13:41 hours a fire alarm was received on Pony Trail. With no homeowner home crews completed a 360 of the residence with no signs of smoke or fire utilizing the thermal imaging camera. While leaving crews received an additional fire alarm on Indian Trail Drive. A complete interior investigation was conducted and it was determined that the alarm malfunctioned. At 15:12 hours a mutual aid engine was requested by Oakland to Indian Hills High School for a fire alarm. Engine 331 with a crew of 4 responded along with 330. Units were released by Oakland command within a few minutes. Just another busy day in the boro!

At 15:38 hours communications dispatched the fire department to Lynn Drive for a reported dumpster fire within close proximity to a home. Units arrived on location and reported a 40 cubic yard construction dumpster fully involved with fire. Crews placed two lines into service in order to combat the fire and make an aggressive knock. The contents of the fire made extinguishment difficult and as a result foam was deployed. The volunteers began to overhaul and pull apart the debris within the dumpster to expose all the hot spots and hidden fire. Once the fire was completely extinguished a backhoe was utilized to pull apart the contents of the dumpster. Job well done by all the members on scene operating in the oppressive heat!

At 1058 Hours Communications dispatched a car fire on Rt 287 N.  Chief Bohny, Squad 332 (FF Pianitinni), Engine 331 (Capt. Steenstra) and Engine 335 (FF Kowalski) responded.  As units called into service the exit mile marker was unknown and Mahwah and Oakland FD's had been dispatched as well.  Chief Bohny arrived on location and advised that the incident was in Franklin Lakes and Squad 332 would be the first in unit.  The Squad arrived on location and began extinguishment, Mahwah Tanker 425 and Chief Roe arrived on location and supplied water and manpower with our Engines 331 and 335.  The fire was quickly extinguished an all units returned.

At 1452 Hours Communications dispatched an Activated Fire Alarm on Cheyenne Dr.  Chief Bohny, Ladder 342 (FF Rhoner), Engine 331 (FF Divver) and Tanker 341 responded.  Crews checked the home and reported accidental activation by contractors.


 
   
   
Mutual Aid to Waldwick

Communications dispatched the Ladder to Waldwick to stand by while they battled a house fire.  Chief Bohny and Ladder 342 (Lt. Dodd) responded and stood by with Upper Saddle River Assistant Chief Raymond and Engine 1231.  No calls were logged during the stand by.
